Ullswater Way & Challenge

ULLSWATER WAY & CHALLENGE - Saturday 19th October 2024

OVERVIEW

The beautiful, low level and lakeside twenty mile Ullswater Way opened in Easter 2016 and our inaugural event, following the official route in full, quickly followed in October of the same year. Fast forward and we now offer two versions; The original low level twenty mile route, or the Challenge route - adding four miles and significant elevation via the high level fell path around the head of Glencoyne from Glenridding to Gowbarrow. A great day out and glorious views are assured… subject to weather!

Please note, This is NOT a race; considerate runners are welcome but please expect to give way to walkers and other users.

ROUTE

The event departs from Parkin Memorial Hall and both ‘Way’ and ‘Challenge’ routes head clockwise around the Lake passing over The Cockpit, Howtown and Hallin Fell first. After Glenridding, you will have a choice; stay low and lakeshore on the official ‘Way’ towards Aira Force and around Gowbarrow Fell, or head up for the ‘Challenge’; encompassing the higher level Glencoyne traverse to Dockray and Gowbarrow Summit before descending to meet the original route. Please note the high level route will not be open in bad weather; all participants will follow the lower level 20 mile route. You'll thank us for this, honestly!

The route is waymarked as per LDNP and Ullswater way signs. There will be some additional signage and event staff at key points where needed.

EVENT CENTRE / REGISTRATION / START & FINISH

Our event Centre is Parkin Memorial Hall, Pooley Bridge - CA10 2NH

Registration will be at the Parkin Memorial Hall on the Friday evening and Saturday morning prior to the event. Exact registration times will be communicated by email after signup. The event itself starts between 0800 and 1000 - you choose your start time, but please note; we request that slower walkers go early and faster runners later.

KIT

You will need clothing and footwear suitable to the conditions. We suggest a waterproof jacket as an absolute minimum along with a drinks bottle or mug to use at our checkpoints.

We also highly recommend a small bag with basics such as a spare layer or two, some snacks and a drink. Subject to weather, waterproof trousers may be wise! As with all NAV4 events - if you are unsure of anything we encourage you to ask. Drop us a line either via social media or email and we’ll get back to you asap.

The higher level Challenge section is much tougher than it's low level alternative and requires good basic fell walking / running skills and some common sense when packing kit. More information to follow via the email you supply at signup.

LOGISTICS & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

The event is 'low key' with several checkpoints offering food, drink and support from our experienced event staff throughout. Exact checkpoint locations will be communicated by email nearer the start date via the email you supply at signup.

Individual support teams, pacing or 'crew' are not allowed, or required.

The route uses a variety of paths varying from wide tracks to narrow rocky paths with some small amounts of tarmac lane. A written route description will be available to all.

At the finish we'll have free tea, coffee, cake and the famous NAV4 soup in your limited edition souvenir mug. There are of course several pubs and eateries in the village for beer and meals later. Should you wish to make a weekend of it, there are plenty of accommodation options nearby too.

AND FINALLY

All / any event updates will be issued via the email you supply at signup so please type carefully!

We look forward to welcoming our friends old and new for this lovely day out!

Joe and the NAV4 Adventure Team.
